It has been one year since we lost our boy Jack. He was 13 years and 7 months old. We adopted Jack when he was around 6 months old from a "free to good home" ad.
It was the best decision ever. Jack was a fierce dog. He was loving and playful, but also had a temper. And was a great guard dog.
We didn't know what we were getting into when we brought him home, but we knew he was OURS...forever.
By all accounts, Jack was a big old baby. He loved his furry siblings, especially CoCo. And he loved his boy-my son. They were bonded like twins.
Then, in 2010 came the dreaded cancer. We are thankful that it was slow growing, giving us years instead of weeks of months. In the end, Jack's mind was still sharp, but his body gave out. We made the decision to let him to on June 23, 2014. He was in his home, surrounded by love.
To Jack: My sweet boy...I will never forget you. Ever. You were our protector, our friend, and a love that I was never expecting. You were stubborn and loyal. You loved to chew on your bones and even an occasional stuffie. And you loved your CoCo. I know that she still misses you. She is getting up in age now, being 11. I dread the day when she joins you. But until then, I promise to love her and keep her well.
Jack, if I could tell you one thing...it would be thank you. Thank you for loving me and my son. Thank you for protecting us during that big flood...Thank you for always guarding our doors and windows. For making us feel so safe. Thank you for loving us and forgiving us when we messed up. You were our first family dog and I'm sure we made a lot of mistakes. But you didn't hold them against us.
I know you are running free with Koova and Doodle. I hope you boys are finally getting along better. Remember, you are their big brother.
Thank you my sweet boy...even with your temper, you were the most gentle of giants. I miss you each and every day. Every single day. I look forward to the day when we can be reunited and I rejoice in that thought.
Jack-Jack, Moose, Jackson, Samurai Jack....I love you.
